This invention provides a system (10) for monitoring the occurrence of animal mating. The system (10) includes a first apparatus (12) when fitted to a male animal, and a second apparatus (14) when fitted to a female animal. The first apparatus (12) includes a triggering means (16) fitted to a part of the male animal by way of a halter (18) fitted around the neck of the animal. The second apparatus (14) includes a radio frequency transmitter (30) and a trigger (32) for the transmitter (30), the entire second apparatus (14) being fitted to a corresponding part of the female animal. Said parts of the animals are defined as corresponding parts because said parts are typically located proximate each other when the male and female animals engage in mating.
