The invention relates to a method for the production of plates from metal sheet with regional variations in thickness (D, D1, D2), for use in the preparation of structural pieces for motor vehicles. At least one region (A, B) of a metal sheet is transversely displaced by shear forming from a first side (3) of the metal sheet (1). The prominence (7), generated on the opposing second side (8), is then removed by machining, for which the metal sheet is held on a magnetic holding table (12). The whole surface of the second side (8) is machined by a milling cutter (11).
