Sensor comprises: a sensor element (2) with a sensor layer of ceramic or organo-ceramic material that has luminescence yield that is dependent on the environmental value being measured; a light source (1) for excitation of the luminescent layer; and a recording unit (4), especially a CCD camera, for spatial and temporal recording of the luminescent light. ??The invention also relates to use of an inventive sensor for determine the position and profile, i.e. mode structure, of a laser beam, especially an infrared laser beam. Accordingly the sensor element is irradiated with a laser beam which generates a temperature profile within the sensor. The position and profile of the beam is then determined indirectly by recording the luminescent light output.
