HEAT AND MATERIAL BALANCE METHOD OF PROCESS CONTROL FOR PETROCHEMICAL PLANTS AND OIL REFINERIES

A method for controlling a chemical processing system (figure 1) for an ethylene splitter system using a control system for a continuous distillation tower (10) and demonstrates the loading variables concept of control. A mixture of ethylene and ethane is introduced into the central portion of the tower (10) through a feed input line (12). A level controller (14) is used to control the level of bottoms (16) in the lower portion of the distillation tower (10). An internal reflux controller (18) is connected between the lower portion and from tower (10) through a vapor withdrawal conduit (20) and is directed to a heat exchanger (22). A vapor pressure controller (24) controls the flow of coolant to the heat exchanger (22) that partially condenses the vapor.
