A METHOD AND AN APPARATUS FOR PROVIDING BOTH VOICE SERVICES AND DATA SERVICES IN A HIGH DATA RATE WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

New methods and apparatus for providing voice services and data services in high speed (HDR) wireless communications. One or more sub-channels are formed on the forward link of the HDR system. One or more subchannels include one or more timeslots occupying a specific location in a frame of the forward link. One or more sub-channels are assigned to voice services. Voice services in one or more sub-channels are provided according to CDMA principles. Such principles are disclosed, for example, in IS-95, IS-2000, or other standards known to those skilled in the art, which occupy specific locations. The remaining timeslots are allocated to data services. In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, additional subchannels are formed using all remaining time slots. Additional subchannels are assigned to data services such that each subchannel carries data to another user. In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, the number of subchannels is allocated to voice services, and the number of subchannels allocated to voice services varies as the need for voice services and data services varies.
