PURPOSE: A device and method for recognizing a position coordinate is provided to improve a reliability of a product by recognizing a character and a figure with accuracy. CONSTITUTION: A panel(4) includes an insulation spacer(10). A comparator(12) compares an electric potential of the upper plate(6) of the panel(4) with a specific reference voltage and outputs a signal pressed by the panel(4). A voltage measuring unit(14) measures and outputs the electric potential of the upper plate(6) of the panel(4) for making the panel(4) recognize a position coordinate of a pressed portion of the panel(4). A control unit(2) is connected to the edge of the lower plate(8) of the panel(4) for varying an electric potential of the lower plate(8) independently and recognizes a position coordinate of a pressed portion of the panel(4) through a signal being output in the comparator(12) and the voltage measuring unit(14). The control unit(2) independently varies electric potentials of the four edges of the lower plate(8) of the panel(4), overlaps and reads a position coordinate of a pressed portion of the panel(4), and checks an output of the comparator(12) after and before reading the position coordinate, and judges whether the read position coordinate is valid.
