PURPOSE: An optical recording/reproducing apparatus and television combination system and a method for controlling captions and subtitles of the system are provided to prevent caption data and subtitle data from being displayed on a television screen, being overlapped with each other, when data recorded in an optical recording medium is reproduced. CONSTITUTION: A combination system having an optical recording/reproducing apparatus(300) for reproducing data recorded in an optical recording medium and a television set(400) for outputting the reproduced data includes a subtitle part(35), a caption part(45) and controllers(38,48). The subtitle part is set inside the optical recording/reproducing apparatus and decodes subtitle data included in the reproduced data. The caption part is placed inside the television set and decodes caption data contained in the data transmitted from the optical recording/reproducing apparatus. The controllers control the operations of the subtitle part and the caption part to selectively operate the two parts.
