PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for recovering stability by determining instability of a head in a data storage system are provided to automatically restore instability of a head by applying a bias shock to the head. CONSTITUTION: A head(201) detects signals recorded at a disk. A signal processing part(204) reproduces the detected signals as data before being recorded in a read mode, and generates recording current corresponding to data to be recorded in a write mode. A system control part(203) executes a predetermined property test related to error generation of data by using the reproduced data. If the result of the property exceeds a predetermined standard range, the control part generates a thermal asperity detect control signal. If the result of the property exceeds a threshold value allowing thermal asperity detect result, the system control part generates a current shock control signal. A thermal asperity detecting part(205) counts detection frequency of thermal asperity by baseline popping noise in a predetermined section in the case that the thermal asperity detect control signal. A head supply current control part(202) applies reset current pulse to the head in case that the current shock control signal is applied.
