PURPOSE: A method of fabricating a polymer composite material is provided to improve the performance characteristic of the target material by maintaining the tissue outline of the directionally solidified giant magnetostrictive material while increasing the electrical resistance. CONSTITUTION: A rare-earth phase is removed from a directionally solidified giant magnetostrictive material. The empty interstitial void where the rare-earth phase is removed is impregnated with a polymer resin. The polymer resin is then solidified. The removal of the rare-earth phase is made through heat-treating the magnetostrictive material at the process temperature or more. The gaseous material within the magnetostrictive material is all removed by making the target material be in a vacuum state before the impregnation of the polymer resin. When the polymer resin is solidified, it is pressurized to prevent the foam from being generated within the resin. The grand magnetostrictive material is a rare-earth metal-based magnetostrictive material.
