PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus are provided to obtain the position of a target in a convenient and accurate manner and allow the biopsy needle to accurately reach the target. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a unit for transmitting an ultrasonic signal to a target and receiving the echo signal reflected from the target; a three-dimensional image forming unit(104) for receiving two-dimensional data from the ultrasonic signal transmitting/receiving unit and forming a three-dimensional volume image by combining the received data; a target extraction unit(106) for receiving the three-dimensional volume image from the three-dimensional image forming unit and extracting the target; a position calculation unit(108) for calculating the position of the extracted target and providing the position information of the biopsy needle inserted into the extracted target; a display unit(110) for displaying the extracted target image; and a unit for providing error information to the position calculation unit on the basis of the position information.
