PURPOSE: A multimedia terminal using a universal DSP(Digital Signal Processor) chip and a method for coding and decoding multimedia data using the same are provided to make the multimedia terminal at a low price, to make a data processing speed fast, and to freely select diverse devices in the terminal by not fixing each module interface in the terminal. CONSTITUTION: A handset(21) transmits/receives a control interface signal, a data signal, and an address signal with the universal DSP chip(22). A code memory(24) stores a multimedia data processing algorithm. A buffer memory(25) temporarily stores the multimedia data to be processed subsequently. The universal DSP chip(22) controls the multimedia data processing. A memory interface(23) carries out the data interface between the code memory(24) and the buffer memory(25) by installing within the universal DSP chip(22).
