In the communication apparatus including an antenna array including multiple antennas, the method and apparatus are provided for optimizing the use of the antenna array beamforming technique. Communication device determines the orientation of the communication unit from the communication device, and determining the arrival direction of a signal received from the communication unit by the communication device via each of the multiple antennas. Further, the communication device determines the distance to the communication unit from the communication device, and also determines multiple signal quality metrics on the basis of the multiple signals received by the communication device from the communication unit. Communication apparatus and then the determined orientation and the determined arrival direction, wherein by a determined distance, or the determined signal quality metric of any one or more of the basis to determine whether employing the antenna array beamforming technique, forming an antenna array beam by that technique the use of optimization.
