PURPOSE: A microorganism Rhodococcus sp. strain DK17 with metabolic versatility to degrade a wide variety of substituted benzenes and terpenes is provided, thereby effectively purifying the polluted environment without causing the second environmental pollution. CONSTITUTION: A microorganism Rhodococcus sp. strain DK17(KCCM 10332) has the activity to degrade alkyl benzenes, phenols, phthalates or terpenes, wherein the alkyl benzene compound is selected from the group consisting of o-xylene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, propylbenzene, butylbenzene, pentylbenzene, hexylbenzene, toluene and benzene; the phenol compound is selected from the group consisting of phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol and p-cresol; and the phthalate compound is selected from the group consisting of phthalate or terephthalate; the terpene compound is limonene. 2,4-dimethylresorcinol, 2,5-dimethylhydroquinone or 3,4-dichlorocatechol is prepared by culturing Rhodococcus sp. DK17(KCCM 10332) together with m-xylene, p-xylene or 1,2-dichlorobenzene.
