COMPOSITION FOR PROTECTING BRAIN CELLS AND ENHANCING MEMORY, CONTAINING ASIASARI RADIX EXTRACT

PURPOSE: A composition containing an Asiasari Radix extract having the ability of neuroprotection against brain cell damage induced by -amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid while stimulating memory is provided. Therefore, it can be used as formulations or health food for prevention and treatment of a degenerative brain disease as well as a memory enhancing agent. CONSTITUTION: The composition contains 0.5 to 50% by weight of an Asiasari Radix extract, together with a carrier, an excipient and a diluent, based on the total weight of the composition. The Asiasari Radix extract is obtained by the following process consisting of: extracting in a C1-4 lower alcohol, dissolving the extract in a mixed solvent of methanol and water, adjusting the solution to pH 2 to 4 with an acid and then extracting with chloroform; adjusting a fraction which is not dissolved in chloroform to pH 9 to 12 with ammonium hydroxide and then extracting with a mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol; and extracting a fraction which is not dissolved in the mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol with methanol.
