(SAR-55), a type of hepatitis E virus associated with hepatitis, now called hepatitis E, which is not hepatitis A or hepatitis B but spreads through the intestines. The present invention relates to the expression of the entire structural gene region of SAR-55 in an eukaryotic expression system, termed open reading frame 2 (ORF-2). The protein expressed in this way can act as an antigen in diagnostic immunoassay and can act as an immunogen or vaccine to produce HEV viral particles which can prevent the infection of hepatitis E virus.
