The present invention provides a pulse oximeter sensor 410 having a light source optimized for the low oxygen saturation range and maximizing immunity to chaotic induced artifacts. Preferably, the red 112 and infrared light sources 114 are used in conjunction with the red light source 112 with an average wavelength between 700-790 nm. The infrared light source 114 may have an average wavelength as in conventional devices used for patients with high saturation. The sensor of the present invention is further optimized by aligning the space of the light emitters 112 and 114 and the light detector 116 to minimize the sensitivity of the chaotic induced artifacts. The present invention optimizes the selected wavelength to achieve matching of absorption and scattering coefficient products for red and IR light sources. This optimization provides healthy readings in the presence of chaotic artifacts, including force deformation, tissue deformation, and oxygen saturation itself.
