The present invention relates to a method for synthesizing 10,10'-substituted-9,9'-biacridine molecules and derivatives thereof. The molecules of the present invention are present in the presence of a signal solution containing a chelating agent, a sulfoxide, a reducing sugar, an oxidizing agent or a combination of oxidizing agents, an alcohol and an aqueous sodium tetraborate at a pH of 10.0 to 14.0 at a concentration effective to produce chemiluminescent signals. Under, it appears to catalyze the production of light by chemiluminescence. The 10,10'-substituted-9,9'-biacridine of the present invention may be used alone or attached to a hapten or macromolecule and used as a label in the preparation of a homogeneous or heterogeneous chemiluminescent assay. When the molecules of the present invention are used in conjunction with other chemiluminescent labeling molecules, complex analyte chemiluminescent assays are possible.
