METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CODING IMAGE BY CONSIDERING PERCEPTUAL COLOR TOLERANCE

PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for coding an image by considering a perceptual color tolerance are provided to define peripheral image characteristics and adjust a perceptual color tolerance of a pixel, thereby improving the coding efficiency of an image while preventing deterioration of the quality. CONSTITUTION: A subtractor(12) generates a prediction error image defined as a prediction error which is a difference between an original image to be coded and a previously restored image output from a motion estimator(19) and a motion compensator(20). A perceptual prediction error processing unit(25) decides a weight value of a perceptual color tolerance value of each pixel according to the complexity of the obtained image, and applies the adjusted perceptual color tolerance to each prediction error of the prediction error image provided from the subtractor. The perceptual prediction error processing unit forms a perceptual error image formed of only prediction errors generating a perceptual color tolerance.
