Method for determining extracellular ion concentrations, and their changes, in the basolateral region of adherent cells. The cells are deposited on a matrix that contains an ion-specific, immobilized fluorescent dye (I) and is present on a transparent substrate. The ion concentration is then determined by fluorescence measurements. An independent claim is also included for a device for the new method comprising a transparent substrate with, deposited on it, a matrix containing (I).
