The invention relates to a method for identifying the pile of textile materials, especially for identifying PA 6 and PA 6.6 in carpets. The laser beam covers a distance of up to 25 mm during a time of measurement of up to 25 seconds. Said area is exposed to radiation involving a wave number 13,000 cm-1 and a spectrum is measured every 0.2 mm. A vector-standardised spectrum is produced from the individual measured values.
