Heat treatment comprises irradiating metal object (101) e.g. steel spring in a predetermined surface section with electromagnetic radiation produced by an emitter (103) having a temperature - 2900 K in the near infrared (IR) region with an effective wavelength region of 0.8-1.5 mu m.
