Process for removing platinum and/or palladium from an aqueous nitric acid solution comprises contacting the solution with a weakly basic ion exchanger in its chloride form and charged with hydrochloric acid; and eluting the charged ion exchanger with concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid containing FeCl3 and NaClO3. Preferred Features: The aqueous nitric acid solution is free from rhodium and iridium. FeCl3 is added as FeCl3.6H2O. The hydrochloric acid has a normality of 7-12, Fe3+ is present in an amount of 40-80 g/l in the solution.
