A spacer, for a bundle of nuclear fuel rods (4) in a fuel element (1) for a nuclear reactor, comprises a mesh (9) which guides the rods, and which has sleeves (10). Each sleeve has three stamped out sections, which are lateral with respect to the sleeve longitudinal axis, and which have an axially parallel rib. The first mesh has a second mesh section comprising slats that cross each other, with flag members that are bent into the cooling channel and cause turbulence.
