The use of parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) or its fragments is claimed for induction or stimulation of intestinal calcium absorption in premature or newborn babies or children upto 1 year old. The peptide is prepared by molecular biological or biochemical methods, has sequences of human, bovine, ovine or porcine origin or from other animal species and is administered orally or parenterally. An Independent claim is included for the use of orally or parenterally administered medicaments containing biologically active PTHrP fragments, prepared synthetically or isolated from milk, for inducing or providing intestinal calcium absorption in adults with deficient or defective intestinal calcium uptake.
