The method involves estimating the free transmission cross-section of an exhaust gas feedback line, and hence an exhaust feedback gas mass flow, using known instantaneous operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. The gas quantity flowing in the feedback line is estimated using parameters available in the controller depending on the load point.
