The jack has a rod (12) and a pair of tongs (14) with interconnected tong halves (16, 18) of which one half has a first handle (22) and operating part (24) and the second half has a second hand (26) and operating part (28). A lifting disc (36) is mounted displaceable on the rod which in turn passes through the two operating parts. Compression springs (38, 40) are provided whereby the first both lifts the lifting disc along the rod and presses the first and second handle parts apart whilst the second spring is used to pretension the lowering plate in the lift direction and lift it along the rod. The first lowering plate (44) is connected in an inclined position to the rod for swivel movement with the first operating part.
