Separating device for postal items (P1-5) has a supply belt that together with guide rolls and a holding back agent (H1) forms the charging point for the device. The supply belt is configured as a segment belt (B1) with a drag segment (R) and a slip segment (SL). The length of the segment belt and the length of the dragging section are chosen to be longer than or match the length of any postal items. Other dimensions are also optimized. The length of the drag section is based on a constant for the maximum slip plus a safety factor, which is subtracted from the shortest possible length of postal item, while its minimum is greater than or equal to the distance (A) to a downstream transport device (3). The length of the drag segment is less than the slip segment.
