The reduction in effectiveness of the lift surfaces in the end phase is necessary to improve the aiming precision and maintenance of the set direction. The lift surfaces may be removed from the missile before the end phase, i.e. ejected or blown off; or they may be retracted, folded or repositioned, either by a motor or by unlocking them so that the air flow moves them to the required position.
