Magnetoresistive sensor system has a weak magnetic measurement layer system and one or more hard magnetic AAF (artificial anti-ferromagnetic) reference layer systems. A magnetic layer (8) that is arranged at a distance from the AAF layer (10) has single axis anisotropy in a single direction, while the AAF layer is magnetized in a different direction with the angle ( alpha ) between the two directions less that 90 and optimally less than 60 degrees. Independent claims are included for: (1) a magnetoresistive 360 degree sensor comprised of four inventive sensor systems; (2) a method for manufacturing a magnetoresistive sensor.
