A multilayer lustrous pigment comprises a metal substrate completely covered by: (A) a layer packet consisting of (i) a colorless dielectric layer of refractive index (n) = 1.8; and (ii) a colorless dielectric layer of refractive index (n) of not more than 1.8; and (B) an optionally selectively absorbing layer. An Independent claim is included for production of the pigment.
