To give a self-setting operation to a yarn processing machine, e.g. a spinning machine or a bobbin winder or yarn treatment machine and the like, variable outer threshold values (d1,d2) are set for a yarn thickness (d(t)) to give no more than an initial probability level of yarn fractures (e) in a given longer time span. Yarn measurements are taken to vary the outer thresholds to give a second probability value of the breaches (r) of the first narrower thresholds (d3,d4), in a given time unit, to act on the outer threshold values, so that an actual yarn break will occur only on a breach of one of the outer thresholds.
