The method involves connecting a sensor (2) to an evaluation circuit (4) and carrying out a set-up phase, during which a diagnosis of the voltage behavior on all connecting lines (3) between the sensor and the evaluation circuit is performed with respect to the level and the time profile. The level is investigated to determine whether the signals are from an incremental or absolute displacement sensor. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a software or firmware component and a circuit arrangement for implementing the method.
