Process for improving the wear resistance of titanium and titanium alloys comprises using a welding additive made from a solid composite material consisting of a titanium alloy matrix with dispersed fine hard material reinforcing particles; and welding as a hard metallic layer on the surface of a component made from titanium or titanium alloy. Preferred Features: The welding additive consists of TiAl6V4 or TiAl6V6Sn2 as base material. The fine hard material reinforcing particles are made from titanium carbide or titanium boride having an average particle size of not more than 40 mu m.
