The system has a number of position indicators (101-103) on one of the devices at intervals along the direction of motion and a reading arrangement on the other device for evaluating the position indicators. The reading arrangement has a number of receptors (201-203) at intervals along the direction of motion, thus distance between each two receptors is different from that between each two position indicators.
