A method for preparing a rail track with integral insulating sheet in the ballast has rolls of insulating material carried on top of the stacks of track lengths, with the rolls held between the rails. The rolls are lifted off the stacks by an overhead lifting system, rotated through 90 deg and lowered onto the track bed. The overhead lifting system rolls out the insulating sheet onto the new bed and places the prepared track lengths directly onto the sheet to continue the track. The insulating rolls are moved outwards by more than a track length so as not to impede track laying. The track bed is completed by pouring ballast onto the insulating sheet.
