The level or grade crossing (10) at a railway permanent way (12), with at least two rails (14,16) on a supporting sleeper (18), has at least one crossing plate (28,30,32) supported near the rails. The crossing plate is at least partially of aluminum or a material with aluminum content. The plate supports (58,118) are of an elastic material, preferably rubber. The ends of the crossing plates are at the ground, away from the rails. The upper surfaces of the plates have a non-slip structure.
