To form hollow zones in injection molded components, capsules containing electrically conductive water are placed in the mold before or during or after the molten plastics has been injected. Two electrodes in the capsule have external electrical contacts. When an electrical current is passed to the contacts, the water is converted into an expanding gas which destroys the capsule and leaves a hollow zone within the plastics mass. To form hollow zones in injection molded components, capsules containing electrically conductive water are placed in the mold before or during or after the molten plastics has been injected. Two electrodes in the capsule have external electrical contacts. When an electrical current is passed to the contacts, the water is converted into an expanding gas which destroys the capsule and leaves a hollow zone within the plastics mass. A bi-metal is attached to one electrode which, through the heat generated by the electrical current makes contact with the other electrode to cause a spark and explode the gas by ignition.
