A sensor with a digital camera (5) on the surface of a moving component (2) like a handrail on an escalator or moving pavement picks up given structures (8) within a preset timescale and makes digital signals available to evaluatory electronic components. One of the structures recorded is defined as a reference structure and compared for a mismatch with an identical structure during the course of further camera shots within the preset timescale. An Independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring speed of moving components like handrails on escalators and moving pavements carrying people.
