Apparatus for hardening the bearing surfaces (2-5) of a rotating crankshaft (6) has inductors (12-15) for heating the surfaces which are connected to an adjusting system (28-32). A monitor (11) detects the angle of rotation of the shaft and the signals produced are fed to a control unit (33) which raises or lowers the inductors in response.
