In a first operational mode, additional thermal energy available during warm running, is used in the flow line of the heat exchanger (4a) for the most efficient possible passenger compartment heating. On reaching limiting temperatures of: the cooling system, its components or cabin heating energy demand, change over takes place to a second mode of operation. This is the result of an intervention in the cooling circuit, and minimizes the risk of local overheating in the additional heat source (3). An Independent claim is included for the corresponding heating and cooling equipment for a vehicle.
