Hydroxyapatite-containing biomaterial comprises calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate and a matrix of extracellular organic polymers, where the calcium compounds and matrix grow together to form a composite structure characteristic of biomineralization. An Independent claim is also included for a process for producing a biomaterial in which a hydroxyapatite coating is deposited on a solid surface, comprising: (a) colonizing a solid substrate with adherent cells and culturing the cells until extracellular matrix production is complete; (b) removing the cells from the substrate; (c) treating the surface of the substrate with an aqueous mineral solution; and (d) optionally separating the resulting biomaterial from the substrate.
