A method for positioning engraving organs for use in engraving of print cylinders (1) that comprise engravable slabs (A1, A2) arranged adjacent to each other in an axial direction of the cylinder. The engraving organs (31, 32) have associated video cameras (51, 52) so that the combined assembly can be moved on an engraving carriage using displaceable units (61, 62). The positioning of the engraving needles (41, 42) is carried out using the video cameras. The needles are first coarsely positioned according to a set distance. A sample cup is cut in each slab. Axial positioning differences between design and actual positions are determined using the video cameras. Lastly the axial differences are compensated.
