For the movement of winding cylinders (6,6.1,6.2) at a cylinder magazine, to be fed into a roll winder for winding paper webs and the like into wound rolls, they are moved along two angled running rails (3) forming a movement path (4). They travel through the action of gravity (H) on the sloped path, to move from the start (A) towards (BR) the end (B) of the path. The speed of cylinder travel is reduced by units (19,21) which apply a timed resistance (W) by a positive fit, to slow them down to a speed (VB) of = 0.1 m/second and preferably = 0.05 m/second. The resistance is applied to the rolling cylinders by a resistance system (19) with two hoses (21) filled with a fluid (20) using water or air which are set to act on the cylinders.
