The lubrication method uses a control unit (CU) for operation of a piston pump (P) delivering the lubricant under pressure to a cylinder lubrication point (1) during the lifting phase of the engine piston stroke, with opening of a valve (S) adjacent the lubrication point during the feed stroke of the piston pump upon reaching a given response pressure. The lubrication is matched to the engine operating parameters with delivery of a constant lubrication quantity by the piston pump by reducing the number of feed strokes of the piston pump per unit of time. An Independent claim for a cylinder lubrication device for a 2-stroke diesel engine is also included.
