A method for the sulfonation of aromatic polymers, especially polyarylene sulfides and polyarylene-ether-ketones, involves a reaction with a sulfonating agent and a halogenated hydrocarbon. A method for the sulfonation of aromatic polymers comprising repeat units of formula (I) involves (A) reacting the polymer with a sulfonating agent and a halogenated hydrocarbon and (B) precipitating the sulfonated product with a polar precipitating agent (PA). -(Ar-X)- (I) X = S and/or groups of formula -(O-Ar)n-CO-; n = 1, 2 or 3; Ar = 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-phenylene, biphenylene, naphthylene, anthrylene or other arylene groups (optionally substituted with 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy and/or aryl) An Independent claim is also included for polyelectrolytes obtained by this method, with a degree of substitution (DS) of more than 0.5 mmol sulfonic acid groups/g dry substance.
