Quantification of viral or bacterial particles having a cholesterol-containing envelop, comprising: (a) staining of particles with a fluorochromic or fluorogenic substance which binds to the cholesterol containing envelope; and (b) detecting the fluorescent signals of the particles, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a kit for quantifying viral or bacterial particles having a cholesterol-containing envelope including the fluorochromic or fluorogenic substance and fluorescent inert particles in an aqueous medium as reference standards; and (2) use of a fluorochromic or fluorogenic substance that binds to a cholesterol-containing envelope viral or bacterial particle for quantifying viral or bacterial particles having a cholesterol containing envelope.
