The method involves dividing the conveyor path (1) into separately driven input and output sections, raising the incoming boards (P) above the input section (4) if the output section (5) is stationary, moving the raised boards from the input side to the output side to form a stack of raised boards above the output side. The boards are lowered in stages onto the output side after re-starting operation of the output stage, while the incoming boards are raised and moved to the output side until the stack is formed above the output side, then the boards are again fed horizontally from the input to the output side.
