The invention relates to the utilization of cholesterol, lanosterol, phytosterols and different sterols of natural and artificial origin in accordance with formula (I) for the protection of the skin against the harmful effects of UVA radiation. The above-mentioned substances are excellent active ingredients for the production of sunscreen agents. Particularly effective are cholesterol and lanosterol, in addition to different phytosterols such as stigmasterol.
