The method involves inserting and/or attaching a non-reproducible physical random pattern during manufacture of an object to be protected. The random pattern is detected by a sensor and converted into a representative signal. The signal and/or derived pattern data is stored for later comparison with a signal and/or data acquired by detecting the pattern in a checking phase. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: an arrangement for securing objects against counterfeiting and/or imitation and/or for identifying them.
