A trace management unit with a trace buffer (3), in which data of a monitored program is filed in the trace zones (7a,7b) of the trace buffer (3). Each trace zone (7a,7b) is respectively assigned a specifiable trace position in the program, at which the trace management unit (1) writes in the valid data into this trace position. The trace management unit (1) matches the size of the trace zones (7a,7b) to the amount of data to be filed/stored.
